One of the ways Dr. Steven M. Clark evaluates candidates for weight loss surgery is with the Body Mass Index (BMI), which calculates the relationship between height and weight. Bariatric surgery may be appropriate for persons with a body mass index of 40 or greater, which is associated with an extremely high health risk. A body mass index of 35 or greater can be equally serious in combination with other health problems, such as Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, or Sleep Apnea. Candidates for bariatric surgery should not smoke or be dependent on drugs or alcohol. Candidates for weight loss surgery should be mentally stable.
