If you’ve been dealing with excessive weight for five years or more and diet and exercise aren’t enough, you may be a candidate for obesity surgery. Patients from Fort Wayne, South Bend, and throughout Indiana who feel that their health and happiness are at risk are especially encouraged to contact Premier Bariatric for an evaluation.
One of the ways we evaluate candidates for obesity surgery at our Indianapolis practice is by a measurement known as body mass index (BMI). It measures the relationship between your height and your ideal weight. Fifty extra pounds on a person who’s just over five feet tall is obviously more serious than on a person who’s six feet tall. When evaluating the need for obesity surgery in our South Bend and Fort Wayne patients, BMI calculations allow us to help you decide if your weight problem is serious enough to warrant surgery. You may already know your BMI number. If not, we can help you determine it.
Obesity surgery for Fort Wayne and South Bend patients may be appropriate if the BMI value is more than 40. This is considered morbidly obese and qualifies as an extremely high health risk. A number above 35 is considered severely obese and can be an equally serious in combination with other health problems. And obesity can be a cause of health problems, including diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart and vascular disease, joint problems, gallstones, urinary incontinence, sleep apnea, psychosocial problems, and breast, uterine, prostate and colon cancers.
If you are concerned about a few extra pounds that are merely detrimental to your self-image, you should probably seek assistance to develop a more rigorous program of diet and exercise. But if you feel you are seriously or morbidly obese, you should contact Premier Bariatric about obesity surgery in the Indianapolis area.
