Frequently Asked Questions About Bariatric Surgery

Our bariatric surgery patients come to us with lots of questions. Here are just a few of the more common:

Question: Who is a candidate for bariatric surgery?

Answer: If you have been overweight for more than five years and have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35 or greater with other weight-related health problems, you may be a candidate for bariatric surgery.

Question: Do I need to be in good health to qualify for weight loss surgery?

Answer: No. The fact is that many of our patients are in poor health because of diseases caused by their morbid obesity. That’s one of the most important reasons to have bariatric surgery.

Question: How soon will I start to lose weight?

Answer: Weight loss actually begins right after the surgery, but it may not be noticeable to you for about a week. LAP-BAND® patients will experience a consistently paced loss of one or two pounds a week. Gastric bypass patients will lose more at first, then taper off after about twelve to eighteen months. Individual results will vary.

Question: Can I regain weight after bariatric surgery?

Answer: Yes. Bariatric surgery provides the opportunity to dramatically reduce the amount of food you eat and the number of calories you absorb from the food you do eat, but there’s no guarantee. Patients who return to their old habits will eventually begin to put back the lost weight. That’s why Dr. Steven Clark and the staff of Premier Bariatric will work with you to design a diet and exercise plan to help you maintain your weight loss.

Question: What kind of foods will I eat after bariatric surgery?

Answer: Many people seem to think that bariatric surgery patients are doomed to a life of eating soft bland food. Not so. Our goal at Premier Bariatric is to return you quickly to a normal diet. Of course, it may not be what you used to think of as normal. We will help you get the most out of what you eat, to provide maximum nutrition from a significantly smaller amount of food.

Question: Can I have plastic surgery to remove excess skin after I lose weight?

Answer: Yes, but we recommend waiting at least a year after your bariatric surgery and until you are down to your goal weight. Dr. Steven Clark will help you decide when the time is right for plastic surgery.
