Our Indianapolis gastric bypass surgery patients are usually those who eat constantly throughout the day or have an addiction to sweets. The goal for these patients is not only to reduce the quantity of food they eat, but also to reduce the number of calories absorbed from that food. Food passes first through the stomach, then the small intestine and large intestine. Most of the calories are absorbed in the lower stomach and small intestine.
The first step in gastric bypass surgery is to isolate a small portion of the upper stomach, using staples and stitches. This will become the new functioning stomach. Because of the dramatically reduced capacity, the patient’s appetite will be satisfied with a much smaller amount of food.
The next step is to bypass the lower stomach and upper small intestine, to achieve reduced calorie absorption. This is done by severing the small intestine about halfway down and attaching the lower portion directly to the upper stomach section. The upper portion of the small intestine is then spliced into the lower portion below the original cut to drain the gastric fluids still produced by the lower stomach.
Modern methods applied in gastric bypass surgery benefit our patients from South Bend, Fort Wayne , and throughout Indiana. Dr. Steven Clark received extensive training in laparoscopic bariatric surgery at Ohio State University’s prestigious Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Instead of one large incision, he makes several much smaller incisions. Dr. Clark uses small surgical tools inserted through some of the incisions and views his work with a laparoscope, a slender tubular fiber optic device inserted through another incision.
After your procedure at our Indianapolis gastric bypass surgery center, Dr. Steven Clark and the staff of Premier Bariatric want to make sure you will not only lose weight but also keep it off. We will work with you to develop a plan of diet and exercise, which, combined with your new smaller stomach and reduced caloric absorption, will make it possible for you to have the slimmer, healthier body you want.
Dr. Clark and his professional staff welcome gastric bypass surgery patients from South Bend, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis. We are centrally located in Indiana for convenient access from across the state. Please contact Dr. Clark today for a weight loss surgery consultation.
